Upon a Velvet Invitation

Upon a velvet invitation
to go deeper into the silence
of a silent prayer in church

I became a seasoned sprinter,
exploding with a fury
into the unforgiving matrix
of distance over time.

I became a pusher for a bobsled,
churning madly for speed enough
to jump into the missile
and hurl me down the icy slope

I became the lost one
who died upon the curve
and floated in the black
feeling terror in my error

I became the found one
with solid chair beneath me
tooling with a quiet calmness
into the void of peace
